Small businesses have experienced unprecedented growth over the last decade. In fact, the Small Business Administration (SBA) revealed that in 2005 alone, 627,000 companies were established. Small to medium scale enterprises contribute a lot to the US economy. They also employ over half of private sector employees.

Compared to business franchises, start-ups have a higher failure rate. This is attributed to the fact that franchises enjoy initial and ongoing support from the franchisor.  It is estimated that as much as two-thirds of new small businesses fail after two years. Less than half of the initial numbers make it to its fourth year. However, this statistic is controversial because some analysts believe that the success rate is higher than estimated.

Data from the US Census Bureau indicates that around half of new start-up enterprises still exist after four years of operations. In starting a new enterprise, it is important to get financing. Commercial lending institutions play a big part in contributing to the growth of SMEs in the country.
